If I read about or hear another business leader talk about “having fun” I’ll throw up.
Honestly, it’s about on a par with “my door is always open” or a couple of David Brent maxims.
So we want our people to feel that it’s a great place to work, what does it mean at all?
Well, we know it isn’t the money, we know the hygiene factors only get you so far, we know that bullying and discrimination have no place in our company, we support charities and the local community. Are we a great place to work?
Well if we look to the Best Companies to Work For as outlined in the Sunday Times, they suggest eight workplace factors to measure:
- Leadership
- My Manager
- Personal Growth
- Wellbeing
- My Team
- Giving Something Back
- My Company
- Fair Deal
This doesn’t get us too far and the questionnaire is so comprehensive that the wood and the trees start to merge.
In my experience, a great place to work is about the following things, in no particular order:
- How am I treated?
- Is there a good team spirit?
- Are the leaders authentic?
- Is there sufficient recognition and reward?
- Are people supported when the going gets tough?
- Is there purpose and meaning to what we are doing?
Other good things like social care, flexibility of employment, fairness, good holidays and pensions contribute to the mix.
So what do we do about it? How do we get there and stay there? Well a good place to start is your values and guiding principles, then we can move onto the policies and the leadership.
The biggest challenge is putting these values into practice and keeping them there. This means effective leadership, communication, setting expectations, engaging people and other elements of successful leadership.
What I do is help define what Great Place to Work means and then, more importantly, assist you in creating the actions and behaviours, policies and practices that impact on those key areas as written above.
This help comes through:
- Leadership development
- Company communication tactics
- Behavioural training
- HR policies and practice
